All day and night, it is normal for you to breathe through one side of your nose and then the other. It is abnormal for the turbinates on both sides to swell at the same time and cause a stuffy nose. If your nose is stuffy in the spring and fall, you probably have an allergy and need allergy tests. If you have thick yellow or green mucous, you probably have an infection and need a culture and antibiotics. If you are exposed to irritants such as hair spray or smoke, that is probably the cause, and if your stuffiness is worse in the winter, the cause is probably breathing dry, cold air. If no cause is found, your doctor usually diagnoses vasomotor rhinitis which means that he doesn't have the foggiest idea what's causing your stuffiness and the only relatively safe and effective treatment offered today is daily use of a cortisone nasal spray such as Vancenase, Beconase or Rhinocort.

Your nose is supposed to clean, heat and moisturize the air that you breathe. The inside of your nose is covered with a sticky mucous that traps dirt, pollen, mold and other pollutants and prevents them from reaching your lungs. Inside of each nostril are large ridges called turbinates that have large blood vessels in them. When the inner lining of one side of your nose fills up with pollutants, the blood vessels inside the turbinates enlarge and swell the turbinates so they stop air from entering that side of your nose and force you to breathe through the other side of your nose. Then small hairs called cilia in the lining of your nose sweep the mucous and filth toward your mouth where you swallow them and they pass from your body.

Researchers at the Mayo Clinic found fungi in 96 percent of people with chronic sinusitis. The most common fungi are alternaria, penicillium, cladosporium, aspergillus, candida and fusarium. A sinus cat scan will tell whether a person has a sinus infection. If the cat scan shows fluid levels indicating a sinus infection, the doctor should order a fungus culture of the nose. If the culture is positive for fungi, the doctor should consider treatment with antifungal medication, even though there are no good studies to show the fungal medicines cure sinusitis, because the present treatment of cortisones works only in the short run, and shortens life by causing osteoporosis, high blood pressure and obesity. If the fungus infection is positive, the person should be treated with the appropriate anti-fungal medication such as Sporanox, Lamisil or Diflucan.

Occipital neuralgia causes pain in the back of the head but this can be referred to other areas. This is because the ganglion interconnects with the trigeminal ganglion in the brain stem. Throbbing is often associated with this type of headache because of proximity to the occipital artery.

The auriculotemporal nerve is located near the ear and the top of the jaw on both sides. Common headaches with problems to this nerve are temple headaches. This nerve is commonly damaged in TMJ surgery. it is usually pounding because it is near the temporal artery.

Over time, the world's search for an ideal pain killer has expanded to include a wide variety of anti-inflammatory drugs in addition to aspirin. These anti-inflammatory drugs can be divided into two categories - nonsteroidal and steroidal drug. The more frequently used of the two categories, NSAIDs, work by inhibiting the formation of chemicals in the body that cause pain, fever and inflammation. This drug group includes pain killers such as acetaminophen and ibuprophen. NSAIDs have proven beneficial, but nevertheless, they are all associated with significant side effects.

Most drugs are consumed for a common purpose - the hope that they will offer some degree of pain relief. Whether out of desperation or habit, people regularly turn to pain medications to relief the agonizing pain caused by arthritis, migraine headache, back injuries, surgeries and other ailments. To consumers' satisfaction, pain killers often live up to their promises and dull what seems to be unbearable pain. In turn, however, they can also bring a variety of dangerous and frequently overlooked consequences.

Attacking more than pain - Part 1

NSAIDs inhibit the formation of thromboxane A2 and prostaglandin endoperoxides which are necessary for platelet aggregation. With most NSAIDs, this increased bleeding period lasts only until the drug has been eliminated (1-2 days); however, aspirin produces prolonged effects of 7-10 days. Regarding wound healing, there is some evidence for impairment of healing of intestinal anastomoses. Although acetaminophen is not as likely to cause stomach damage as aspirin, it is characterized by its own harmful effects. Larges doses of acetaminophen may cause severe liver damage and death.

Aspirin is a prime example of an OTC drug that provides a mixture of positive and negative results. Around for years, aspirin has become the common solution to many health dilemmas. Because of its popularity, studies show that many people no longer view aspirin as a drug, consuming it just as they would a daily vitamin. Basil Hirschowitz, M.D., a University of Alabama at Birmingham gastroenterologist noted this observation: "In 30 cases of patients with surgery for intractable ulcers, blood tests showed they had been taking aspirin. But half the patients denied using aspirin. Many people may not realize aspirin is in the medicine they are taking or they are in denial of the potential dangers of taking the drugs" (Aspirin).

Indeed, aspirin is a drug with the potential to cause lasting damage. Aspirin is a locally irritating, corrosive substance, which when used for a long time or in high doses can increase the likelihood of developing peptic ulcers in the lower part of the esophagus, the stomach or the beginning of the small intestine. Aspirin also causes bleeding in the stomach and over time, can weaken the body's ability to slow and contain bleeding thoughout the body. Taking aspirin for as little as three days can increase the amount of bleeding during childbirth, tooth extraction and surgery. Many physicians recommend that people with serious liver disease, kidney malfunction, vitamin K deficiency and blood clotting disorders refrain from taking aspirin. Furthermore, many people are allergic to aspirin, experiencing a wide variety of reactions from hives and rashes to swollen lymph nodes, severe breathing difficulties and drop in blood pressure. Rarely a person will have an anaphylactic reaction (collapse in shock) on taking it (Withers).

None is without harmful side effects, whether in the form of over the counter (OTC) drugs, such as aspirin and nonsteroidal anti-flammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or prescription drugs such as narcotics and steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Unknown to many consumers, pain medications may be attacking more than pain, thereby inhibiting the body's natural defenses against illness.

The functions of many NSAIDs are widely misunderstood. For example, while numbing pain, acetaminophen does not help stiffness or inflammation. However, many consumers admit to consuming acetaminophen for this purpose. Another primary group, the elderly, consume pain medicines without realizing that they now have reduced renal clearance of NSAIDs and require appropriately reduced doses.

What's the connection between fungus spores and nail fungus? Fungi that are actively growing will eventually produce spores - tiny reproductive stages that break away from the plant and spread to new places on air currents, in water, and on living things that move about. Most people have seen fungal spores: perhaps you've seen a green dusty powder inside the bag of a loaf of bread that's gone moldy, or noticed that portobello mushrooms leave a black coating on your cutting board. These substances are actually large numbers of spores (a single spore is microscopic so you can't see it - by the time they become visible there are millions.)

It's important to understand that most fungi produce spores of one find or another - infectious fungal spores, that is, those that can cause infection in people, only come from a few species. Portobello mushroom spores, and those of most other environmental species will not hurt you (though it's probably not a good idea to casually inhale spores of any fungus, for various reasons). There is only a connection between fungus spores and nail fungus infection when the spores are from one of fungi that can grow in keratin, the protein that is common in nails, hair, and skin.

Infectious fungal spores are produced by fungi growing in infected toenails and fingernails. Six patients with advanced Parkinson's disease received cell implants, which were inserted into the brain tissue. The researchers performed efficacy evaluations at one and three months after surgery, and then at six, nine, 12, 15, 18 and 24 months. Yearly follow-up visits are ongoing and will continue.

Parkinson's disease is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by tremor, rigidity, postural instability and slowed ability to start and continue movements. Most patients with PD require therapy with the medication levodopa to control symptoms three to five years after a diagnosis of PD.

"The implants were well tolerated," the authors report. "We observed an average improvement of 48 percent at 12 months after implantation in the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale motor subscore with the patient in the off state, which was sustained through 24 months."

Natividad P. Stover, MD, of the University of Alabama at Birmingham and colleagues conducted an open-label pilot study to evaluate the effect of unilateral implantation of human RPE cells attached to gelatin microcarriers.

Human retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells produce levodopa and can be isolated from post-mortem human eye tissue, grown in culture, and implanted into the brain attached to microcarriers. (The retinal pigment epithelium is the pigment cell layer found in the inner layer of the retina of the eye.)

However, disease progression and long-term oral treatment with levodopa may lead to the development of motor fluctuations and difficulty in performing voluntary movements (dyskinesias).
